ALAN J MCBETH
I have been in the architectural design business for over 25 years and have been
involved in the management, design and construction of many buildings in many
sectors from £500M underground railway stations, hospitals and shopping centres to
corporate office headquarters in locations not just in the UK.
I spent just under 2 years running a design office in Hong Kong in the late 90s.
My ability to communicate effectively with quite large teams and client bodies , has
been successfully demonstrated, both as design team leader ,project manager and
coordinator as well as ‘people enabler’.
In the last 10 years I have also developed excellent knowledge in practice of low
energy building design with an eye on tight budgets and innovative solutions.
Not only acting as project manager I am an architect by profession and therefore
fully aware of process , cost and programme implications technically within
construction and capital projects.
I have been involved in a number of innovative blue chip corporate cultural
workspace projects since the early 1990s and these have gone on to win design and
technical awards. These projects were IT intensive. This includes the design concept
and implementation of the Vodafone Call Centre facility in Stoke on Trent completed
During my career I have successfully served at all levels of company management up
to Director / Board member level responsible for sizeable numbers of staff and
maintaining operating budgets and profits.
I am particularly successful in delivering difficult projects to tight budgets and
timescales and have never had a project exceed planned budget yet - in both
public and private sector environments.
Mainly due to the UK recession - Around 2009, I moved over from private consultancy
to practicing clientside project management and acting as design adviser and
My professional time has been supplemented by investing in properties over the years
which maintains financial stability in future.
I have spent time in 2010/11 at the University of Leicester helping them set up the
brief and design for the first low carbon passivhaus medical school building in the
world, as Major Works Project Manager. ( Its on site now 2014). ( better than BREEAM
I have been a RIBA regional design judge several times in the past.
To assist in my project design work I have full 3D computer design skills using sketch -
up which has proved enormously useful in communications with users and clients as
project manager or project designer. To design in your head and present like this is
In 2012-14 I was working with Center Parcs UK helping to look after their large UK
building stock of several thousand properties and still kept my hand in with regards to
design and construction.
I was managing a large internal project to replace the 100m diameter dome
swimming pool glazed roofs without closing the building to the public .
The logistics were extremely complicated and it went really well – requiring intensive
management interface with the business and a tight budget.
